Hello, I am Sophie
Role: project manager. Parent. An expat residing in Maastricht, Netherlands.
Several years ago, I moved here with my family. What began as a short-term assignment gradually grew into a new chapter of life abroad.
How It Started
Moving to Netherlands wasn’t in the grand plan. Like many relocation stories for expats, it began as a job opportunity and soon grew into something far bigger.
The initial months were demanding — new systems, new routines, new expectations. Everyday tasks felt more complex than they should.
The Adjustment Period
There was culture shock, uncertainty, and a lot of learning by doing. Yet gradually, routines settled in. We found places that suited us, connected with other families, and began building something that felt stable.
Why I Built DriftwoodAtelier
Most information online was either corporate-level relocation guidance or surface-level tourism material. What was missing was an honest, practical viewpoint from everyday family life.
This site exists to fill that gap — practical guidance grounded in real life in Netherlands.
What This Site Does (And Doesn't)
This site is:
- Hands-on experience from living in Netherlands
- Centered on family life and day-to-day realities
- Updated when something meaningful changes
This site isn't:
- Not a tourism authority resource
- A sponsored-review platform
- Just another travel blog
Looking Ahead
Our stay in Netherlands continues, and so does the learning journey. As long as the information remains useful, I’ll keep recording what we discover.
If you have questions about family life in Maastricht or anywhere in Netherlands, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Best regards,
Sophie
